CABINET PHOTOGRAPH OF FIVE MEMBERS
OF 6th MACHINE GUN BATTALION,
4th Brigade of Marines,
Neuwied-on-the-rhine, Germany, 1919

This studio photo was taken sometime between January and March, 1919, in a photographer's studio in Neuweid-on-the-Rhine, Germany. I have seen three other photos taken of Marines in this same studio. The frontispiece photograph of Elton Mackin in Suddenly We Didn't Want to Die, was also taken in this studio. The individual Marines are, from left to right, (standing), a Marine by the name of Messersmith, unit unknown; Cpl Flarnt Hale, 107979, Headquarters Detachment, 6th Machine Gun Battalion; (sitting): Cpl Alpheus Appenheimer, 107960, Headquarters Detachment, 6th Machine Gun Battalion; Cpl Archie Murchie, Jr, USMC, 107972, Headquarters Detachment, 6th Machine Gun Battalion; Cpl Rollie E. Cooley USMC, 107985, Headquarters Detachment, 6th Machine Gun Battalion. Alpheus Appenheimer won a Croix de Guerre and a Silver Star Citation for hauling rations and ammunition under heavy shell-fire to the front line trenches by mule-team at Belleau Wood. He won the same decorations a second time for hauling ammunition by mule-team seven kilometers under heavy shell-fire at Blanc Mont.
