3rd Platoon, 23rd Company.
By the snow on the ground, and the EGA device on the

A German Minnenwerfer (trench mortar) captured by Marines during the fighting
at Belleau Wood, being towed back to a salvage station. The Marine at left,
holding a grenade in one hand and some hardtack in the other, is
Pvt Edwin Beach, of 23rd Company, 6th Machine Gun Battalion. The other Marines
are unidentified, though, in all liklihood, they are members of 23rd Company as well.
(Signal Corps photo. Thanks to Gilles Lagin.)

Photograph from the estate of Bertram Aanes, who served as a member of 15th Company, 6th Machine Gun Battalion. Photo evidently shows members of 15th Company with Hotchkiss machine guns, in a relaxed moment, "scanning the sky for avians".
Date & location unknown.
