General Orders No. 23

1. In accordance with instructions from G.H.Q. A.E.F., this division will move to the front for training for a period of approximantely one month. It will be assigned to and installed in the sector now occupied by a French Army Corps, and will be placed under this Corps for tactical instructions.

2. The 2d Artrillery Brigade will proceed by rail directly to new area about March 13, 1918, movement being made under direction of Brigade Commander. Property left behind will be packed for shipment and stored at present station pending further orders.

3. The Division will move by rail exept motorized units of the train and motor vehicles, which will proceed overland to the new area.

4. Duration of journey about thirteen (13) hours.

5. Movement by rail will be in accordance with attached train schedule.

6. All transportation, animals and baggage belonging to units assigned to a particular train, together with a loading detail of one officer and thirty (30) men, will be at the entraining station four (4) hours before scehduled departure of train and will report to the entraining officer upon arrival. This officer upon arrival at entraing point will submit to the Entraining Officer and to the Railway Transportation Officer a statement signed by commanding officer of his unit showing the number of officers, men, vehicles, animals and tonnage of property traveling by this train.

7. Necessary trucks will be placed at the disposal of each regiment and separate battalion, and the French Mission, for transportation of extra property. Organization commanders and officer in charge of French Mission will notify Motor Transportation Officer of time and place that trucks should report. One truck will be on duty at each entraining point from 2:00 p.m., March 13, 1918, until completion of entraining, and will report to officer in charge of entraining for orders.

8. The Division Surgeon will arrange to have one motor ambulance at each entraining point during period of entraining at that point.

9. Troops will arrive at entraining point one and one-half hours prior to time schedule for the departure of their train.

10. Field and combat trains, properly loaded, will accompany their respective units.

11. Billeting parties and a detraining detail will proceed to SOUILLY in accordance with instructions previously issued.

12. Entraining will be under the immediate directions of officers as follows:

At BOURMONT: Major John C. Montgomery
At BREVANNES: Capt. Edwin W. McCauly, 5th Marines

Officers above mentioned will consult with railway officials and make all preliminary arrangements on ontraining; also with regimental commanders for detail of necessary officers and men.

13. Entraining officers will have direct charge of all details of loading and priority of same. They will designate organizations, wagons, material, etc., which should occupy each car.

14. Trains will be spotted at the station of departure four (4) hours before the scheduled time for leaving.

15. A halting place for the troops outside of station yard will be assigned buy the ontraining officer at which place distribution of troops to cars will be made.

16. For BOURMONT station, for troops coming from west of Meuse river, heads of columns will halt at the bridge over the Meuse; for troops coming from BOURMONT and east thereof, heads of columns will halt on road abreast of Headquarters Troop stables.

17. At BREVANNES, heads of columns will halt at the crossroads east of the station.

18. Company letters may be marked on cars, but no other marks that would give the identity of any particular organization.

19. Motorized units of the trains will move by road in accordance with instructions issued from these headquarters to the Commander of the Trains; route NEUFCHATEAU-GONDRECOURT-BAR LE DUC-SOUILLY.

20. The necessasry trucks will report to the Division Quarter-master for transportation of property pertaining to Division Headquarters.

21. Passenger motor cars will proceed independently to the new area as conditions warrant.

22. All sick in this area will be evacuated to Base Hospital No. 23 at VITTEL, necessary arrangements being made and transportation furnished by the Division Surgeon. Those left in present area who require medical attention after departure of division will receive same at Replacement Medical Supply Depot, 2d Division, BOURMONT.

23. All trains will stop at NANCOIS-TROUVILLE for one hour where a hot meal will be served by the French authorities. For trains leaving from BOURMONT this stop will be four and one-half hours after departure. For trains leaving from BREVANNES this stop will be five hours after departure.

24. Arrangements will be made enroute by commanding officer ofeach train for necessary unloading detail to report to detraining officer upon arrival at detraining point. Cars will be unloaded and train released within two hours after arrival at detraining point.

25. Upon detraining, units will be met by a representative of the command who will deirect them to their proper towns where they will be assigned to billets by respective billeting officers.

26. Railhead will be established at Souilly. Distributing point will be announced later.

27. Ammunition Depot will be established at HEIPPES. Ammunition to be shipped to Revigny for transfer to Depot at HEIPPES.

28. Sick in the new area will be transferred to hospitals established by the Second Sanitary Train at places to be announced later.

29. The Second Division Post Office will be at DIEUE.

30. Division Headquarters will be established at SOMMEDIEUE at 12:00 NOON on March 16, 1918.
