ROYAL FLYING CORPS COMMUNIQUES,
1917-1918

Chaz Bowyer (ed).

Grub Street, 1998. NEW copy. Hardcover with dust jacket. 42 photographs on glossy paper. Index, 258 pages. "It was in WWI that the birth of large-scale aerial warfare was witnessed. Pilots learned their combat skills quickly, in the heart of battle, and in the thiick of the action was the Royal Flying Corps, founded in 1912. The RFC soon developed its own strong identity, and from July 1915 onwards weekly communiques of squadron activities were published. Based on the pilots own reports, the concise, factual terms of these communiques depict a remarkable story of heroism and daring and are an unrivalled contemporary record. Two volumes have so far been published, covering the period 1915 to the end of 1916. This is the third and final volume, detailing the busiest period of the RFC's existence. The comprehensive coverage includes observation and bombing sorties, damage inflicted and incurred in clashes with enemy machines, intelligence gathered and so on. Air crew are frequently mentioned by name. There is no comparable source of such day-to-day operational activity.
