Still the most eloquent of all the histories of Belleau Wood.
EXCERPT: "By evening Wise's battalion was spread wafer thin across a
front of nearly two and a half miles. He possessed no machine guns,
no rations, limited ammunition for both rifles and Chauchats. On his
left Wass had found no sign of the 23d Infantry; on his right Williams
no sign of the 6th Marines. This was partly Wise's fault: Williams'
company stood considerably to the rear of Hill 142. Understandably
concerned over his bare flanks, he telephoned regimental headquarters,
now a couple of miles behind Marigny at Carrieres. 'They'll show up,'
he was told. They had not shown up by evening, nor had any rations.
The French filled the food gap with hardtack and cans of the slightly
spoiled, stinking, stringy monkey meat. Cooking made it slightly more
palatable, but fires would only attract German shells. Instead they
ate it cold. And as they forced it down they watched an immense
artillery barrage creeping south out of Bussiares. It would get
to them soon enough, they knew--there was nothing to do now but
wait."
