The following names are gleaned from The Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, 1775-1783, by John H. Gwathmey, published at The Dietz Press, Richmond, Virginia, in 1938. The records, both state and federal, consulted by Mr. Gwathmey number in the thousands and are to be found primarily in the Virginia State Archives, and the United States War Department. They include account books, bounty warrants, pension records, various military rosters and registers, and various early histories.

There are some 68,000 names in this register, alphabetically arranged, and I am going through a few hundred names daily, extracting any name identifiable as a Marine, and am including whatever information is given in each case. I will be adding new names as time permits.

According to the editor, the majority of Marines served on the Atlantic Seaboard, many on the Ohio River, and a few on the Mississippi.

If anyone can provide further details regarding any of these Marines, I will post it here and credit the contributor.
