FRAMED LETTER FROM FLOYD GIBBONS TO HIS PUBLISHER.
The typed letter is on Gibbons' own stationary and reads: "April 2, 1930. My dear Mrs. Swartz: Thank you for your recent letter. It was mighty good of you to write that you have enjoyed the radio yarns and especially the Steinmetz Eulogy and I want you to know that your kind expression of opinion is greatly appreciated. You may use the signature of this letter as the autograph for "The Red Knight of Germany." Sincerely Yours, (signed) Floyd Gibbons." A photograph (which does not appear to be original) of Gibbons shows him in Army uniform with eye patch and arm in sling. The ornamented brass plate reads: "FLOYD GIBBONS, WAR CORRESPONDENT IN FRANCE, WITH PANCHO VILLA IN MEXICO." Gibbons was shot in the eye during an assault on Belleau Wood, in which he participated (though only a war correspondent), on June 6, 1918 and it was his story to the Chicago Tribune about the Marines at Belleau Wood which first brought world-wide acclaim to the Marine Corps. Photograph and letter are separately embedded in a deep double mat, with the letter raised on a platform of
its own. The brass plate is affixed to the surface of the mat.
All under glass. The outer frame is scuffed in several places and
needs to be touched up, but the matting, which is very handsomely
done, is fine. A label on the back is from the studio which sold
this item originally at $295, and reads: "Guarantee: This original
autograph material has been examined by our firm and is guaranteed
to be genuine. Memorabilia, Ltd. 7624 El Camino Real, Rancho La
Costa, California."
