TWO NEWSPAPERS FROM 1929 WITH HEADLINES PROCLAIMING ACTION OF U.S. MARINES IN HAITI

Headline from The Lancaster Daily Eagle, Lancaster Ohio, for Saturday evening, December 7, 1929, reads: U.S. MARINES BATTLE IN HAITI TO RESTORE ORDER. Includes a one-column story complete on page one, mentioning that Marines had killed Haitiens in a battle at Cayes, Haiti. Most of story concerns diplomatic efforts on the part of Hoover to re-establish order on the island.  Second paper is The Marieta Daily Times, Marieta Ohio, for the same date.  Its headline reads: MARINES ORDERED TO HAITI TO QUELL STRIKE: FIVE NATIVES KILLED AND 20 WOUNDED.  Accompanied by a one-column story complete on page one which describes the riot and fighting at Aux Cayes and describes how the marines did everything possible to avert firing, but were finally given no choice by the rioters, who remained defiant.  Story also describes additional Marines, many of whom were recently returned from China and Nicaragua, leaving for Haiti from Quantico and Paris Island. Both papers are complete.  Flaws include four tiny holes along the spine of each paper, where they were mounted or bound at one point, some browning along edges, and some separation along the center fold.  Overall, both papers in sound condition.
