THE INDIAN, No. 7

Second Division Association

Volume 1, Number 7, Published Weekly. 27 May  1919, Nieuwied-on-the-Rhine, Germany.  Good. Wraps. 8.75x11. Some slight foxing to covers. A small brown spot, 1/4"x 1/2", is present on outer edge of interior pages, affecting interior covers and all pages, but nowhere touching the text. Probably caused by a drop of coffee or oil, and looks quite old. There are also three pin-head sized indentations to front cover, scarcely visible, which affect about half the pages. These resemble knife-point perforations which did not actually penetrate through the paper. They are not conspicuous. Staple-bound. There were 14 INDIANS published all told; thirteen in Germany & one aboard ship on the way home. All were published in 1919.  Each cover was unique: an original work of art by a member of the division.  The cover for this issue is by far one of the most professional and original: it shows a soldier wearing uniform, helmet, puttees, scabbord, gas mask & 2nd Div. shoulder patch, standing erect, but with one knee slightly cocked, holding his '03 Springfield rifle by its bayonet, with the stock resting between his boots. His head is bowed. Behind him, surrounding his head and shoulders, are great eagle-like wings. He stands on a vine-clad pedestal, upon which are carved  the chief campaigns of the Division: VERDUN, CHATEAU-THIERRY, SOISSONS, ST. MIHIEL, CHAMPAIGN, MEUSE-ARGONNE. Below the wings and behind the soldier is a banner which reads: "FOR THOSE WHO MADE the SVPREME SACRIFICE". Below the banner, and on either side of the soldier, is the declaration: "THREE THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY OFFICERS and ENLISTED MEN KILLED IN ACTION OR DIED OF WOUNDS". (The Second Division sustained more casualties than any other American division). Unfortunately, all the lettering on the cover design is in yellow, which has faded considerably and is now only visible if held at a certain angle to the light.  The other elements of the cover design: soldier, eagle wings, pedestal, etc., are in brown and have not faded at all. Inside the issue, the lead-off story is "Nearly All Actors---Now", about recent A.E.F. talent shows, including the "Indian Vaudeville Troupe", the 2nd Division's prize offering.  Elsewhere in the issue are the regular column, "York Spur's Dope", as well as stories, notices, original art, cartoons, editorials, gossip, poetry, sports, and news of individual soldiers & Marines, as well as of different companies & battalions. 16 double-column pages.
