THE INDIAN, No. 8

Second Division Association

Volume 1, Number 8, Published Weekly.  June 3, 1919, Nieuwied-on-the-Rhine, Germany.  Good. Wraps. 8.75x11. Staple bound. Centerfold split top & bottom to staples. Entire issue quite browned, especially perimeter of covers, but paper is not brittle. A very small chip missing from lower right corner of front cover. There were 14 INDIANS published all told; thirteen in Germany & one aboard ship on the way home. All were published in 1919.  Each cover was unique: an original work of art by a member of the division.  The cover for this issue shows an orange, yellow & black drawing of a cartoon-style 2nd Division sergeant, wearing helmet, uniforms, 2nd Div. shoulder patch and racing at high speed while carrying his mess kit, components of which are flying in every direction-- clearly answering a summons to mess call.  Inside the issue, the lead-off story is "Bridge Building Records Smashed", a story describing how the Second Engineers of the 2nd Division, by bridging the Rhine at Honnigen with pontoons in 58.5 minutes, on Sunday, May 25th, 1919, broke all records for bridging that river. Elsewhere in the issue are a photograph of a large French tank mounted with a 75mm gun which was used in the attack on Thiaucourt, a full page drawing of a castle at Eltoile, and a drawing captioned: "View of 75 Dugout from the Front, F Battery Position at Fort Troyon", showing a 75mm field gun in a log dugout.  Also included are the regular column,"York Spur's Dope", brief stories, notices, original art, cartoons, editorials, gossip, poetry, sports, and news of individual soldiers & Marines, as well as of different companies & battalions. 16 double-column pages.  SCARCE.
