Nicely bound in 3/4 green morocco over marbled sides with matching end papers and page edges; panelled spines with five raised bands, gilt floral decoration, and gilt lettering. 183 illustrations, mostly engravings, including engraved title pages and two manuscript facsimiles.
GENERAL OBSERVATIONS REGARDING OVERALL CONDITION OF SET: Corners of most volumes fairly worn, often with
leather worn away and paper interior showing through. Bottom and top cover edges of most volumes scuffed
or worn, often with leather or paper beginning to flake off. Outer cover hinges on most volumes lightly
scuffed. Heels of spines of most volumes somewhat scuffed, but only on one volume is the heel seriously
worn away (Vol I of 'Columbus'; see photo). Heads of all spines intact, with only light scuffing.
Gilt lettering & decoration on all volumes bright and undamaged. Spine labels on all volumes intact
and bright. Covers overall are tight and bright, including all spines. Hinges on all volumes intact, with
no cracks or loosening. All in all, quite a sound, and very handsome, set.

front of book, several of them drawings of ships taken from Columbus's letters. Vol I covers the years
