"Chaplain Charles Goe has produced a very vivid report in the form of a diary, giving day by day account some of the most tragic battles of the recent struggle. His book, entitled Is War Hell? has been prepared by him from the actual experiences through which he passed. Many of those who have lost loved ones will find in these pages help and comfort from a Chaplain who knew their son, and who was there to comfort him and, as in so many cases, to conduct the funeral services. Aided by photographs of a very fine and interesting kind, the book will prove to be a suitable memorial which many will cherish, whether they actually had sons under this Chaplain's services or not."

Before the war, Charles Goe served for three years as a chaplin in the Navy. He landed with the 23rd Regiment of the Fourth Marines on Saipan in June of 1944. In July he landed on Tinian and was wounded on July 25. After several months in the hospital he returned to the States and was placed in charge of Navy Chaplain Procurement for Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska.
