The Story of the Second Marine Division
in World War II

Richard W. Johnston

Random House, NY, 1948. Copyright 1948 by the Second Marine Division History Board. VG/G+. First Edition. 8.5x11.5. Stamped color decorations on dark blue boards. Pictorial dust jacket rather badly scuffed along edges and at bottom of spine, but is complete. Some closed tears but no chips. Book itself bright and tight with some slight discoloration to spine which has slightling affected spine decoration. A little of the red dye to 2nd Division insignia on rubbed off, but is still bright. Some water damage along spine of dust jacket which had only a slight effect to spine of book: so slight you cannot see outline of water mark unless book is held at a certain angle to the light. No water damage apparent to inside of book except for a slight water-line in the gutters (along the binding) visible on some pages. Text unaffected. Also a slight purple stain in gutters at bottom on some pages, does not affect text. Binding is tight. No edgewear or cornerwear to covers. Despite all these flaws, this is a tight, strong copy with no structural damage and with scarce dust jacket. In perfect condition it would be a $150 book. Endpapers are a color map showing the division’s activities in the Pacific. Glossy paper throughout, lavishly illustrated with large photographs on most pages. Photo gallery of the division’s eight Medal of Honor winners, also of the division's twelve commanders. Several two-page color maps. 305 pp. Table of Contents reads as follows: The Heritage of Belleau Wood; First to Land Against Japan; Contition "Black" on Guadalcanal; The Mop-Up on Guadalcanal; The Land They Adored; An Island Called Helen; An Atoll Called Tarawa; Enough of Pilikia; To the Heights of Tapotchau; Through the Streets of Garapan; War in the Canebrakes; The Curtain Falls on Okinawa; Epilogue.
