LEGENDARY MARINES OF THE OLD CORPS
George B. Clark

From the author's introduction: "Each person characterized here has, in my opinion, accomplished at least one outstanding thing for which he should be remembered, while many performed multiple services. Sometimes they were innovative (Butler); skilled in certain weapons (Dunlap & Mannix); administrative giants (Henderson & Lejeune); or just plain all around good field field men. Or, in some instances, they just stuck around, even when the going was really tough, thereby maintaining a solid base of leaders. So, sometimes, they are included for that reason. In each case I have tried to fill in pertinent details: where and when they were born and when they died; their highest rank attained plus decorations, when known and if any. In the early days decorations were not liberally handed out and neither were campaign medals. Where possible, a synopsis of their most outstanding field service has been described a bit more thoroughly. I have received a criticism that my writing of most of these entries are in a rather 'literary' fashion. It is true, I have written it so it is a bit more readable and have tried to tell a story about each of the entries. In most, I have selected important periods during their careers as marines to describe in some detail. If that is the ruination of this book, why so be it. This is the sort of detail I'm always looking for and I assume that other people engaged in research are as well. If you'd prefer something dry, don't butter your toast...."
