A 21-year-old Marine from Sunnyvale died this week from wounds he suffered while deployed in Iraq, the Marine Corps said.
Cpl. Bum R. Lee died Wednesday after he was wounded in a hostile action in the Al Anbar province. His family was told that he was wounded Saturday while riding in a vehicle that was hit by a large explosion.
"I had so much faith and no doubt that he was going to make it," said his sister, Elis Lee of Santa Clara. "I was so sure of him coming back to be with us."
Elis Lee said she and her parents had spent Memorial Day weekend praying for her brother's recovery.
Lee was an assaultman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Pendleton. He left for Iraq in February, and was expected to return home in September.
Lee emigrated to the U.S. from Korea with his family when he was 4 years old. He enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after graduating from high school in 2001.
His personal awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
