JIGGS' SUCCESSOR
"'Private Paget' the mascot of The United States Marine Corps
pictured aboard the HMS Cairo during the ship's visit to Washington in
1927. This bulldog had been presented by the Royal Marines to the USMC
on 27 June of that year to replace 'SgtMaj Jiggs', their previous
mascot. 'Pte Pagett' was the fictional hero of Col WP Drury's novels
about Royal Marine life published in the early part of this century."
From The Royal Marines, A Pictorial History,
by Peter C. Smith and Derek Oakley.
Thanks to GySgt D.A. Red Millis II, USMC Ret., Curator, Marine Corps Legacy Museum.

A Cockatoo named Butch
One of the unchronicled Marine mascots was a yellow
crested, white cockatoo which belonged to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division.
Named Butch, it was the particular companion of the Division
Sergeant Major. Butch possessed a fondness for inebriating libations and
for repeating phrases of uncertain propriety, such as: F--k you, by
crackee!

Marine Corps, who cautions that his information is based on
memories of an over-50-year vintage.
