INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. Neal Chapline, a well-known radio personality before the war, was sworn
into the Marine Corps shortly after Pearl Harbor as a Volunteer
Civilian Recruiter, and soon became known as "Molly of the Marines",
broadcasting bi-weekly programs in which she read letters written to
her from Marines across the country and the Pacific. From the Epilogue:
"...The thousands of Marine letters, clippings and pictures were
packed in boxes and moved with Molly wherever she went in hopes that
some day she could put them together for publication in book form. The
necessity of earning a living precluded this for over forty years.
Finally there was time to read them over and select the most
interesting for inclusion in the proposed book. This task alone took
months. It is Molly's hope that some how she will be able to send
these priceless items back to those who sent them to her, or to their
families, as mementoes of one of the most tragically glorious episodes
in our history. Also, as a little remembrance of one small woman whose
love for her Boots and Leathernecks alike was so great it encompassed
the entire Marine Corps."
From The Marine Recruiter, December 1942:
"...'A half-pint dynamo of loveliness and sincerity, pounding out
letters to our Marines, cheering them with neighborhood news,
comforting their loved ones....' are the fitting words used by the
mother of a Detroit Marine to describe Michigan's famous Molly of the
Marines..."
