J.R.R. TOLKIEN. During World War I, in 1915, Tolkien was awarded a First Class Honours degree in English Language and Literature from Exeter, and was also commissioned in the Lancashire Fusiliers. In June he was sent to France and saw action on the Somme. He was subsequently sent back to England suffering from trench fever & shell shock.
