U.S. MARINES IN NICARAGUA, 5 PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS.
A portfolio of five
glossy enlarged prints taken from five snapshots by an unidentified
member of the Fifth Regiment, U.S. Marines. The 5th Marines accompanied
President Coolidge's advisor (and future Secretary of War) Henry L.
Stimson, on his diplomatic mission to Nicaragua in April-May 1927.
The shot of rebels being disarmed by U.S. Marines occured during the voluntary disarmament of both
Conservative and Liberal armies undertaken by the 5th Regiment
immediately after the Peace of Tipitapa on 4 May 1927. Despite the
cooperation of both sides and the success of the disarmament, the peace
lasted only until the dramatic appearance two months later of Sandino and
800 armed followers who, on the night of 16 July, attacked the Guardia
headquarters and a small detachment of Marines at Ocotal.
