There is an extensive section on combat art done by official artists
who served with the division, including John W. Thomason (whose drawings are found throughout the book), Donald L. Dickson, William J. Gunn, Victor R. Donahue, Wayne Seese, Tom Lea, & John R. McDermott. Also included are the citations of the Medal of Honor winners with photo portraits, command organization at various times during WW II, unit citations and the Honor Roll of First Marine Division men killed in World War II. "The Old Breed" is considered one of the finest division histories ever produced for an American unit. Comprehensive in its coverage, the history traces the First Marine Division from its activation in February 1941 through training in the U.S. to initial combat on Guadalcanal. After a lengthy account of savage fighting on Guadalcanal, the book covers Cape Gloucester (New Britain), Peleliu, Okinawa and, finally, duty in North China.
