THE BLOODY ROAD TO PANMUNJOM
Edwin P. Hoyt
Stein and Day, 1985. VG/VG. Damaged corner to jacket on rear panel, otherwise a clean copy overall. Photographs, notes, bibliography, index, 320 pages. "In June of 1950, the North Koreans crossed the 38th Parallel that separated them from the non-communist south, launching an invasion and a war that within days would pit them against the United Nations. American and South Korean troops fought well, and within a few months Gen Douglas MacArthur was claiming that the war was essentially over. Then, without warning, the most populous nation on earth, China, unleashed its hordes of 'volunteers' against the Allies and turned a potential victory into one of the great retreats in military history. Up near NOrth Korea's Chosin Reservoir, American troops struggled desperately against the enemy's overwhelming superiority in man-power. The X Corps, trapped by the Chinese, finally broke out and, thought it suffered enormous losses, escapted to the sea. That retreat was the prelude to the final phase of the Korean War ~ more than two hard years of fierce combat, back and forth across the 38th Parallel.
