Pvt. Willard E. Pauley USMC
Willard Pauley, of St. Albans, West Virginia, was a member 15th Co.
6th Machine Gun Battalion. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
Pvt Pauley's citation reads: "During heavy shelling with high explosive shells, he remained at his post in an open field to keep visual signals with the firing line. He was knocked down by shell explosions and showed utter disregard of all danger by remaining at his post.
At this time, visual signalling was the only means of communication between headquarters
and the company on the firing line. He remained at his post for several hours under circumstances
which called for the greatest determination and courage." This was during
the early days of the Battle of Belleau Wood.
