Paul Pavelka, another Legionnaire in the squad with Kenneth Weeks, had been wounded in the leg at the time the latter was killed. Pavelka already had enjoyed a varied and romantic existence before joining the Legion; a cowboy in the American West, a hiker across the Andes, a sailor that had been to the South Seas; he was living at a sailors' home in New York when the war started. His experiences at sea provided him the nickname of 'Skipper', by which he was known to his Legion comrades.
