Sgt Otto J. Pedt, USMC
77th Company, 6th Machine Gun Battalion, #108171
The History of the Sixth Machine Gun Battalion shows Sgt Pedt on the
77th Company roster on page 85. The roster is mistakenly dated March 15, 1919;
the correct year is 1918. Sgt. Pedt's number indicates that he received his tag when
they were first issued in February 1918 when the 4th Brigade was first consolidated
(while training under the French near Damblain in the Vosges foothills).
Sgt. Pedt does not appear on the Armistice
roster on page 101. It is unknown whether he was transferred, hospitalized, or died in
service.
The single dogtag shown above was recently sold in open auction, with no provenance provided. Tag may or may not be authentic.
Compare with
tag of Pvt Henry Autler, also recently sold at auction without supporting documentation.
To the best of our knowledge, AEF tags displayed neither rank nor unit, and this tag displays both.
