STRETCHERS:
THE STORY OF A HOSPITAL UNIT ON THE WESTERN FRONT

Frederick A. Pottle

Yale University Press, 1929. VG/VG-. Scarce dust jacket, somewhat chipped & frayed, but all present. 1st Edition. White lettering on spine & cover worn off in places, though most remains. Spine slightly sunned. Minimal wear to covers. A tight clean copy. Interior FINE. Photographs (including one of wounded Marines on the lawn at Juilly). 366 pp. The author (the reknowned Boswell scholar in later life), was a ward orderly with Evacuation Hospital No 8, which was stationed near the fighting at Belleau Wood, and later near St Mihiel and the Argonne. A large percentage of the casualties of the ward were US Marines. Among the many interesting descriptions in Pottle’s articulate account are seven pages (156-65) devoted to one of the patients, Herbert Hummelsheim, a member of 15th Company, 6th Machine Gun Battalion, who was brought in during the last of the fighting at Belleau Wood, and who died on July 14.
