Selfridge, Jr. (1836-1924) was the first officer to receive a diploma under the permanent naval academy system when he graduated from Annapolis in 1854. He spent virtually the entire Civil War period on active duty, most of it in combat zones. A career officer, he taught at Annapolis before he returned to sea duty serving as commanding officer on voyages of exploraton to Central and south America. By the time he retired as a rear admiral, he was one of the most important commanders-in-chief in the United States Navy.
