Pvt ERNEST SPENCER, USMC

Pvt Ernest Spencer, #88292, of Toppenish, Washington, was a member of 81st Company. He received both the Distinguished Service Cross and Navy Cross.

Pvt Spencer's DSC citation reads as follows: "For extraordinary heroism in action near Thiaucourt, France, September 12-15, 1918. Pvt Spencer repeatedly volunteered and carried messages through intense machine gun and artillery fire, obtaining valuable information at critical moments."

The History of the Sixth Machine Gun Battalion in the World War lists Pvt Spencer as having been killed in action at Blanc Mont on 3 October 1918, however the photograph above, which shows him wearing a DSC, and which is like other portraits taken in Germany in early 1919, would indicate that he survived the war intact.
