Pvt. GRANNIS I. SYVERSON, USMC

Enlisted 7 June 1917. ID # 108319, 92191 Company C, (77thCo.) 6th MGB, USMC.

Pvt. Syverson received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross, 2nd Division Silver Star Citation. and was one of Pershing's 100.

His citation for the DSC reads: "For extraordinary heroism in action near St. Etienne, France, October 3, 1918. When our advance infantry was forced to withdraw Pvt Syverson's machine gun crew refused to withdraw, but calmly set up their machine gun. The gun was upset by a bursting hand grenade, which also injured two members of the squad. Despite these injuries, they immediately reset the gun and opened fire on the advancing Germans when 20 feet distant, causing the Germans to break and retreat in disorder.
