A THOMASON SKETCHBOOK
Captain John W. Thomason, Jr, USMC
NF/NF. Unclipped jacket in mylar protector. University of Texas Press, 1969. First Edition,
Edited with a Forward by Arnold Rosenfeld.
Introduction by John Graves. 128 pages. "Most of the drawings reproduced here are published for the first time. The themes that fascinated Thomason ~ the Marine in combat, the American Civil War hero, the soldier in China ~ fill the pages of the Sam Houston State College collection, from which the Sketchbook is compiled. So do the subjects of home and boyhood: animals, duck hnters, bayou landscapes. these last occur side by side with and in the midst of sketches of flappers in Paris streets and of the Japanese invasion of China. No matter where he went, Thomason remained nostalgic for "the cotton rows that marched off like the files of a battalion mass; the hay fields, rippling like water under the little winds; and the great sun of Texas . . ."
