FRAMED WAR SERVICE CERTIFICATE, 1919
Headquarters, US Marine Corps.
VG in original frame. (Frame 3/4" black wood, scuffed).
19" high x 11 3/4" wide. Heavy white parchment. A 4 1/4" square
b&w block print of Columbia holding drawn sword & USMC flag,
standing in long dress against backdrop of stormy skies &
battleships in distance. Beneath, in ornate Gothic script, the
following text: "WAR SERVICE CERTIFICATE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
This certifies that Howard S. Knapp performed honorable active service
in the U.S. Marine Corps from February 18, 1918 to July 14, 1919 in the
following organizations and on board the following ships of the Navy:
Mare Island, Cal. Quantico, Va. 4th Brigade, 2nd Div. A.E.F. France,
New York, N.Y. Puget Sound, Wash. (machine-signed) George Barnett
Major General Commandant." A slight 1/2 scratch at top of document,
which is not obvious. A few faint creases, from when originally
rolled, not easily seen. A handsome historical document.
