~~~ On the 20th of April 1939, one of the biggest and most elaborate birthday parades to ever be staged in Germany was about to take place. With the day already declared a national holiday by the German government two days before, hundreds of thousands of people came from throughout Germany to the Reich capital to join the celebrations and mark the 50th birthday of Adolf Hitler. With thousands in attendance, including a selection of prominent figures and over 20,000 official guests, the celebration was much more than a birthday parade. With war perilously close, Hitler used this opportunity to show off his military strength and issue a warning to the western powers.
~~~ This DVD shows Berlin preparing itself for Adolf Hitler’s 50th Birthday parade in 1939 using a selection of rare archive footage, parts of which have been painstakingly restored and can now be presented in color for the first time. Several excerpts used in this documentary were taken by members of the public which have only just been discovered and are presented here for the very first time. These eye witness films help to show an extremely important and personal documentation of the events on that day, five months before the outbreak of the Second World War.
~~~ This extraordinary event saw the largest ever Military Parade in the history of the German Army and can now be almost completely reconstructed because of the many positions in which the films were taken. The German Military Forces, numbering close to 50,000 men, marched over the East-West Axis in review past the tribune in which Adolf Hitler stood. Staggeringly, if the troops had been put together in a row they would have reached a length of almost 100 kilometres. To add to the spectacle, a total of 162 warplanes flew over the capital, providing a once-in-a-lifetime display. This special edition two disc set contains over two hours of footage from the event, as well as film showing the preparations and the build up. Combined with bonus galleries crammed with rare and unseen pictures, this DVD documents the event in it’s entirety and should appeal to all military enthusiasts.
~~~ In the autumn of 1940, the decision was made by Hitler to construct a base of operations from which Operation Barbarossa could be planned and instigated. This almost impenetrable series of structures, located in the Masurian woods near the town of Rastenburg, welcomed the Fuehrer for the first time on the 23rd June, 1941. Although Hitler had a number of similar bases built throughout Europe, the Wolf’s Lair was by far his preferred location, spending a total of over 800 days there during a three and a half year period. In that time, a number of key decisions were made there that drove the Eastern campaign against Russia, as well as a failed assassination attempt on the Fuehrer himself.
~~~ This Special Edition 2 Disc DVD helps to reconstruct the story of this extremely secretive and fascinating center of Nazi operations, from its original design and construction in the early 40s to its continued use by Hitler and eventual demise as the war came to a close. For the first time on DVD, actual witnesses are interviewed and reveal their personal stories about Hitler, giving insight into some of the planning behind the infamous Eastern Campaign. Also featured is an in-depth analysis of the attempted assassination on Hitler by German Army Officer Claus von Stauffenberg, whose exploits were recently portrayed on the big screen in the film Valkyrie. On the 20th July 1944 during a routine strategy meeting, von Stauffenberg placed a bomb hidden in his briefcase just a few feet away from the Fuehrer. Miraculously, when the bomb detonated, Hitler emerged practically unscathed.
~~~ This DVD contains masses of original and rare archive footage, some of which has never been viewed before outside of Germany. As well as documenting the headquarters during the war period, the film revisits the base as it stands today. Even though the complex was abandoned and partially blown up in January 1945, the remains of the vast concrete bunkers still exist today. Combined with a second disc containing over 30 minutes of bonus footage, as well as eight photo galleries of original photographs, Fuehrer Headquarters Wolf’s Lair reveals will appeal to all Second World War enthusiasts.

click to enlarge Hoffmann, Heinrich. HITLER WAS MY FRIEND: The Memoirs of Hitler’s Photographer. NEW copy, hardcover with dust jacket. (Frontline Books, 2011). 5x8, Illustrated. 256 pages.
~~~ Heinrich Hoffman was a key part in the making of the Hitler legend, the photographer who carefully crafted the image of the Führer as a godlike figure. Hoffmann published his first book of photographs in 1919, following his work as an official photographer for the German army. In 1920 he joined the Nazi Party, and his association with Hitler began.
~~~ He became Hitler's official photographer and traveled with him extensively. He took over two million photographs of Hitler, and they were distributed widely, including on postage stamps, an enterprise that proved very profitable for both men. Hoffmann published several books on Hitler in the 1930s, including The Hitler Nobody Knows (1933). Hoffmann and Hitler were very close, and he acted not only as a personal confidante - his memoirs include rare details of the Führer - but also as a matchmaker – it is Hoffmann who introduced Eva Braun, his studio assistant, to Hitler.
~~~ At the end of the war, Hoffmann was arrested by the US military, who also seized his photographic archive, and was sentenced to imprisonment for Nazi profiteering.
~~~ This edition of a classic book includes photographs by Hoffmann and a new introduction by Roger Moorhouse.

click to enlarge Kempka, Erich. I WAS HITLER'S CHAUFFEUR: The Memoir of Erich Kempka. NEW copy, hardcover with dust jacket. (Frontline Books, 2010). 5x8.5, 8 pages of plates. 240 pages.
~~~ Erich Kempka served as Hitler’s personal driver from 1934 through to the Führer’s dramatic suicide in 1945. His candid memoirs offer a unique eyewitness account of events leading up to and during the war, culminating in those dark final days in the Führer's headquarters, deep under the shattered city of Berlin.
~~~ He begins by describing his duties as a member of Hitler’s personal staff in the years preceding the war, driving the Führer throughout Germany and abroad, and accompanying him to rallies. The crux of his memoirs however covers his life with Hitler in the Berlin Führerbunker. During this time he was responsible for a transport fleet of cars, and often drove the likes of Speer or Kesselring on inspection tours to the hot spots on the front; and in March 1945, he accompanied the Führer to his final front-inspection tour. Kempka was also present when news came through of Göring and Himmler’s efforts to seize power and negotiate a truce with the Western Allies.
~~~ Crucially, Kempka also witnessed Hitler’s marriage to Eva Braun, and his last dinner and personal farewell to all those present, before he and his wife committed suicide. Hitler’s final order to Kempka was that he have ready enough petrol to burn him and his wife. Under constant Soviet artillery fire, Kempke, Linge and others poured petrol over the bodies and burnt them.
~~~ The account concludes with Kempka’s hazardous escape out of a burning Berlin more than 800 km through enemy-occupied Germany, home to find his wife at BE. There he was arrested by American C.fI.C. personnel and interrogated before being sent to serve as a witness at Nuremburg.

click to enlarge Norman, Andrew. HITLER: DICTATOR OR PUPPET? NEW copy, hardcover with dust jacket. (Pen and Sword, 2011). 5x8, 30 b&w photographs. 224 pages.
~~~ Written by an authority on Adolf Hitler, this book charts new ground and shows how the writings of a deluded ex-monk, Lanz von Liebenfels and the pseudo-science of Liebenfels and other writers, convinced Hitler that Germany’s destiny was to save the world from a Jewish-Bolshevik conspiracy.
~~~ It was this perverted sense of destiny that drove the Nazi Party and led to the outbreak of WWII and the deaths of some sixty million people as well as the destruction of much of Europe. Using the writings of Liebenfels from his magazine Ostara, Dr Andrew Norman demonstrates how the mass murders of Jews, Gypsies, mentally-ill people and those regarded as less than human had its roots in articles written by Liebenfels. An index of Ostara articles is included and their very titles indicate the malign influences that shaped Hitler’s Germany.

click to enlarge Schroeder, Christa. HE WAS MY CHIEF: The Memoirs of Adolf Hitler's Secretary. NEW copy, hardcover with dust jacket. 8 pages of black & white photos. (Frontline Books, 2009). 6.5x9.5, 272 pages.
~~~ A rare and fascinating insight into Hitler’s inner circle – Roger Moorhouse, author of Killing Hitler
~~~ The last unpublished work by a Nazi of any significance – The Sunday Telegraph
~~~ As secretary to the Führer throughout the time of the Third Reich, Christa Schroeder was perfectly placed to observe the actions and behavior of Hitler, along with the most important figures surrounding him.
~~~ Schroeder’s memoir does not fail to deliver fascinating insights: she notes his bourgeois manners, his vehement abstemiousness and his mood swings. Indeed, she was ostracized by Hitler for a number of months after she made the mistake of publicly contradicting him once too often.
~~~ In addition to her portrayal of Hitler, there are illuminating anecdotes about Hitler’s closest colleagues. She recalls, for instance, that the relationship between Martin Bormann and his brother Albert (who was on Hitler’s personal staff) was so bad that the two would only communicate with one another via their respective adjutants – even if they were in the same room. There is also light shed on the peculiar personal life and insanity of Reichsminister Walther Darré.
~~~ Schroeder claims to have known nothing of the horrors of the Nazi regime. There is nothing of the sense of perspective or the mea culpa that one finds in the memoirs of Hitler’s other secretary, Traudl Junge – who concluded ‘we should have known’. Rather the tone that pervades Schroeder’s memoir is one of bitterness. This is, without any doubt, one of the most important primary sources from the pre-war and wartime period. Christa Schroeder was Hitler’s personal secretary for twelve years in total. She worked as his secretary until his suicide in April 1945, living at the Wolfsschanze near Rastenburg. Her memoir Er War Mein Chef was first published in 1985, a year after her death in Munich, aged 76.

click to enlarge Strawson, John. HITLER AS MILITARY COMMANDER. NEW copy, trade paperback. (Pen & Sword, 2008). 5x8, Illustrated. 256 pages.
~~~ Was Hitler 'the greatest strategic genius of all time' as Nazi propaganda would have us believe, or a facile amateur in military affairs? Why was the startling success of his campaigns in Poland and France followed by the blundering mistakes in Russia, Tunis and Normandy? Might the German General Staff have won the war without Hitler's continual disastrous interference? John Strawson answers these and other questions by showing how Hitler's insatiable preoccupation with war and conquest was translated into reality. While the willpower behind the revitalized German army was Hitler's the author examines the Fuhrer's eccentric use of the most formidable war machine the world had ever seen. This lucid assessment is brought alive by the accounts of those who served Hitler both on his staff and as field commanders.
click to enlarge Taylor, Blaine. MRS ADOLF HITLER: The Eva Braun Photographs. NEW copy, trade paperback. (Helion & Company, 2011). 8.75x12, 750 b&w and 86 color photos. 464 pages.
~~~ The year 2012 marks the centenary of Eva Braun's birth. This is the strange-but-true saga of her life, richly illustrated from her own personal photograph albums, as well as from other captured German archives. She married German dictator Adolf Hitler only 36 hours before their joint suicides in Berlin on April 30 1945, in the last week of the Second World War in Europe. This exciting pictorial biography tells the full story of a Catholic convent-bred young woman - not only as the secret mistress, as many historians have painted her since her voluntary death at age 33 - but also as Hitler's lawfully wedded wife, even though she is still largely referred to today by her maiden name. They met at a Munich photography shop in 1929 when she was 17, and he was already 40. The true nature of their long relationship is fully explained in detail for the very first time: she was heterosexual and he bisexual, but the author concludes Eva most likely remained a virgin until the day she died. Although many reports after the war claimed that he shot himself and that she took poison, the official Russian autopsy of their partially-burnt bodies asserted that both died by cyanide capsules, despite the postwar testimony of all Hitler's closest aides, lending even their deaths an air of mystery. Who was she, really? The answers are here.
~~~ This fascinating, gripping, and tragic story of a pretty, well-liked, middle-class shop girl is of a life mainly lived in the iron shadow of history. In death Eva Braun Hitler became - and remains today, a hundred years after her birth - one of the most famous women in all of world history, alongside such female luminaries as Joan of Arc, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Princess Diana. Eva has been a figure shrouded in controversy, misinformation, myth, and legend, until now. At long last the veil is lifted, with over 800 photographs providing an extensive collection of imagery, including nearly 100 contemporary color shots.
~~~ Eva Braun had a lifelong passion for photography - her close friends nicknamed her the 'Rolleiflex girl' after a camera model - and this is reflected in the array of stunning imagery featured in this groundbreaking book.

click to enlarge Trevor-Roper, Hugh. HITLER'S WAR DIRECTIVES. NEW copy, trade paperback. (Birlinn, 2005). 7.5x5.5, 320 pages.
~~~ The Second World War was Hitler’s personal war in many senses. He intended it, prepared for it, chose the moment for launching it, planned its course, and, on several occasions between 1939 and 1942, claimed to have won it.
~~~ Although the aims he sought to achieve were old nationalist aspirations, the fact that the policy and strategy for their realization were imposed so completely by Hitler meant that if victory had come, it would have been very much a personal triumph: the ultimate failure was thus a personal one too.
~~~ This book presents all of Hitler’s directives, from preparations for the invasion of Poland (31 August 1939) to his last desperate order to his troops on the Eastern Front (15 April 1945), whom he urges to choke the Bolshevik assault ‘in a bath of blood’. They provide a fascinating insight into Hitler’s mind and how he interpreted and reacted to events as they unfolded. The book also has detailed notes which link the Fuhrer’s orders and explain the consequences of his directives and how the Allies responded to them.
click to enlarge Whetton, Cris. HITLER'S FORTUNE. NEW copy, hardcover with dust jacket. (Pen & Sword, 2005). 6.5x9.5, Illustrated. 256 pages.
~~~ In 1918 Adolf Hitler was penniless: within 25 years he was probably the richest man in Europe. In his fascinating book the author sets out to discover not only the extent of Hitler's fortune but how it was amassed and with whose help. He finds that royalties of Mein Kampf represent only the tip of the iceberg. His publishing company Eher Verlag and his fund Adolf Hitler Spende, which many 'voluntarily' contributed to, turn out to be much more important.
~~~ We learn how Hitler's attraction to the opposite sex proved hugely lucrative.
~~~ This book also traces what happened to the property, the funds, the art collection, and other items after 1945 and reveals who is - and who is trying to -profit today from the legacy of Adolf Hitler. Amongst items never before revealed is recently discovered evidence for two of Hitler's bank accounts; the truth about the financing of Hitler's publishing empire; and many other previously undisclosed facts.

click to enlarge Wilson, James. HITLER'S ALPINE RETREAT. NEW copy, trade paperback. (Birlinn, 2005). 6.75x9.75, 350 b&w illustrations. 208 pages.
~~~ Adolf Hitler became 'completely captivated' by Berchtesgaden and the Obersalzberg when he first visited the area in 1923. In time he bought Haus Wachenfeld and made the area his second seat of government. This meant major construction of the Berghof barracks, administrative buildings, airstrips and the famous 'Eagle's Nest'. During the war massive tunnels were dug. Most was destroyed by allied bombing in April 1945.
~~~ This original book tells the story of the area and how it was transformed by Hitler and his henchmen (Goering, Goebbels and Borman) in words and, most significantly, contemporary postcards and photographs.
